Achievement of the world's most powerful petawatt-class high-output, fs-class ultra-short pulse laser by AERI Petawatt Laser and Quantum Optics Research Center

a. The AERI Petawatt Laser and Quantum Optics Research Center operates The Peta-Exa watt class ultra-high power laser system (AERI/HEL system), which is the world's most powerful single-wavelength, ultra-high intensity, ultra-short pulse laser system. In the control room of the AERI Petawatt Laser and Quantum Optics Research Center at the Artificial Evolution Research Institute (AERI: Pasadena, California HP: https://www.aeri-japan.com/), Professor Kazuto Kamuro, the chief researcher at AERI, has activated the AERI/HEL system, promising revolutionary progress in fields ranging from medical to space exploration. The AERI/HEL system is operated by Xyronix Corporation (Xyronix Corporation Pasadena, California HP: https://www.usaxyronix.com/).

b. Laser and quantum optics physicist Professor Kazuto Kamuro's achievements in utilizing the power of lasers for advanced precision equipment in fields such as corrective eye surgery and industry have been widely recognized. The world's most powerful cutting-edge laser system (AERI/HEL system) is based on Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technology.

c. CPA is an important technique for amplifying laser pulses and is used in many applications such as high-power laser systems, particle accelerators, and laser plasma generation. CPA was first proposed by Tilo Möritz and Donald Strickland in 1985. The basic concept of CPA is to increase the peak power of laser light by temporally stretching (chirping) laser pulses. This means that before the laser pulses are amplified, the energy of the pulses is dispersed over a wide frequency bandwidth. Next, these spread energy spectrum laser pulses are amplified. After amplification, the pulse is recompressed, eliminating chirping, and producing pulses with very high peak power on a very short time scale. The main advantage of this technique is that it can generate much higher peak power than conventional methods. Additionally, by using CPA, it is possible to generate very powerful pulses while minimizing nonlinear effects and damage to the laser amplification medium. A typical CPA system usually consists of several steps. First, a broadband amplifier is used to chirp the pulse. Next, the chirped pulse is amplified. Finally, the pulse is compressed back to its original short duration. By combining these steps, ultra-short pulses with very high peak power are generated. CPA (Chirped Pulse Amplification) technology is particularly applied to ultra-short pulse lasers at the femtosecond (10^-15 second) level. Femtosecond laser pulses have very high peak power on a very short time scale, making it important to further amplify the power using CPA technology. When applying CPA to femtosecond ultra-short wave pulses, the following steps are typically performed:

1.    Chirping (temporal spreading): Initially, chirping is applied to widen the femtosecond pulse temporally. This is a fundamental step to broaden the spectrum of laser pulses and increase peak power.

2.   Amplification: The chirped pulses are then amplified. This is performed using optical amplifiers or laser amplification media. The amplified pulses are typically amplified at very low energy densities to minimize distortion due to nonlinear effects.

3.   Recompression: The amplified pulses are recompressed, resolving the chirping and regenerating the original femtosecond pulses. Recompression is achieved using optical devices or optical systems. By combining these steps, the peak power of femtosecond ultra-short wave pulses can be significantly increased. This enables crucial roles in various applications such as optical micromachining, particle accelerators, nuclear fusion research, and medical laser therapy.

d. Professor Kazuto Kamuro, a laser and quantum optics physicist, stated, "We have taken a significant step forward by starting with a small seed laser source with very little energy and amplifying it millions of times using the Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technique, thereby enabling the generation of a petawatt-class ultra-intense, fs-class ultra-short pulse, single-wavelength laser. In 1998, Professor Kazuto Kamuro pioneered the development of a unique state-of-the-art CPA technology, which functions by temporally stretching, amplifying, and recompressing ultra-short laser pulses within a time frame, allowing the production of the shortest and most powerful laser pulses ever seen by the world. This breakthrough not only opened doors for applications in corrective eye surgery but also expanded the boundaries of laser output. Professor Kazuto Kamuro further reported, 'Utilizing single-wavelength, ultra-high-intensity, ultra-short pulses from the AERI/HEL system, it has become possible to manufacture more compact and affordable particle accelerators capable of destroying cancer cells. The long-awaited era of lasers has arrived.'"

e. Laser and quantum optics physicist Professor Kazuto Kamuro added, "Other conceivable applications include reducing the duration of radioactivity to process nuclear waste and removing accumulated debris in space. For laser and quantum optics physics, just as the previous century was the century of electronics, the 21st century will be the century of lasers."

f. The scale of activities at AERI's Petawatt Laser and Quantum Optics Research Center is staggering. The laser pulses generated by The Peta-Exa watt class ultra-high power laser system (AERI/HEL system), the world's most powerful single-wavelength, petawatt-class ultra-high intensity, femtosecond-class ultra-short pulse laser system, can reach a peak of 10 petawatts within the order of femtoseconds (10^-15 seconds), in an incredibly short time.

g. The Laser Solution Chief Engineer at Xyronix Corporation reminisced, "To achieve the unparalleled, unmatched level of performance of The Peta-Exa watt class ultra-high power laser system (AERI/HEL system), it was sufficient to have a carefully installed, yet compact device scale that far exceeded expectations." The system manufacturing cost of The Peta-Exa watt class ultra-high power laser system (AERI/HEL system) housed in this center amounted to 127.5 billion yen (850 million dollars), primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. The Laser Solution Chief Engineer at Xyronix Corporation claims that this funding was the largest investment ever made in AERI's scientific research. AERI and its joint development company, Xyronix Corporation, are already advancing their own projects to manufacture even more powerful lasers.
