Hotline from the Future

- New Sub-nanowatt-order Extremely Low Power Consumption Phase-change Memory Memory LSI for the 6th Generation Neuromorphic Bio-Computing Brain Chipset & Bio Processor (BioVLSIs) -

a. The research team at AERI has developed a new sub-nanometer gate length memory device that can be used to replace existing memory devices and implement the 6th generation neuromorphic bio-computing brain chipset & bio processor (BioVLSIs) with low processing cost and extremely low power consumption characteristics on the sub-nanowatt order. Professor Kazuto Kamuro's research team at Xyronix Corporation has developed the next-generation sub-nanometer gate length phase-change memory LSI featuring sub-nanowatt-order extremely low power consumption characteristics, replacing DRAM and NAND flash memory devices. This research has been published in the journal "The AERI Laboratory Report of Brain & Neuro Science" of the Artificial Evolution Research Institute (AERI: Pasadena, California, HP: https://www.aeri-japan.com/).

b. Current phase-change memory devices face challenges such as expensive manufacturing processes required for high-scale device fabrication and substantial power consumption during operation. To address these issues, Professor Che's research team developed a sub-nanometer gate length phase-change memory LSI with sub-nanowatt-order extremely low power consumption characteristics, achieved by electrically forming extremely small nanometer-scale phase-change filaments without the need for expensive manufacturing processes. This novel development offers not only significantly low processing costs but also the advantage of operating with sub-nanowatt-order extremely low power consumption characteristics.

c. One of the most commonly used memory devices, DRAM, is highly fast but has the volatile characteristic that data disappears when power is turned off. Another memory device, NAND flash memory, has relatively slow read/write speeds but possesses the non-volatile characteristic that data can be retained even when power is turned off.

d. On the other hand, phase-change memory devices combine the advantages of both DRAM and NAND flash memory devices, possessing both high speed and non-volatile characteristics. Therefore, sub-nanometer gate length phase-change memory LSIs are attracting attention as next-generation memory devices to replace current memory devices. Research is actively being conducted on neuromorphic bio-computing memory device technology and 6th generation neuromorphic bio-computing brain chipset & bio processor (BioVLSIs) technology, mimicking the human brain.

e. Current phase-change memory devices require large amounts of power to operate, making it difficult to manufacture practical high-capacity memory device products and achieve the 6th generation neuromorphic bio-computing brain chipset & bio processor (BioVLSIs). Previous research has focused on reducing power consumption by using state-of-the-art lithography technology to shrink the physical size of devices and increase thermal efficiency in memory device operation. However, there were limitations as the degree of improvement in power consumption was minimal, and with each improvement, costs and manufacturing difficulties increased, posing practical problems.

f. In order to solve the power consumption issue of phase-change memory devices, Professor Kazuto Kamuro's research team successfully developed a method to electrically form phase-change materials in extremely small areas, achieving the realization of sub-nanometer gate length phase-change memory LSIs with sub-nanowatt-order extremely low power consumption characteristics, ranging from 1/100 to 1/1000 of the power consumption of current devices. This device surpasses current phase-change memory devices manufactured using expensive lithography equipment.

g. Professor Kazuto Kamuro expressed strong confidence regarding how this research will pave the way for new research fields in the future, stating, "The sub-nanometer to nanometer gate length phase-change memory LSI developed by AERI and Xyronix Corporation offers a new approach to solving lingering issues in memory device manufacturing, which is significant." This device, with significantly improved manufacturing costs and energy efficiency, is expected to serve as the foundation for future advanced LSI engineering, enabling various applications such as high-density three-dimensional vertical memory devices and sixth-generation neuromorphic bio-computing brain chipset & bio processor (BioVLSIs) systems, owing to the possibility of selecting from a variety of materials. END.
